29 November 2020 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow held a Dhamma Programme on the occasion of the Il Full Moon Poya Day.
It is traditional to conduct Dhamma Programmes on this day and the Embassy was graced by Ven. Gnadassiri Thero and Mr. Rupasiri Perera, who spoke on the formative years of Buddha and the importance of true friends in life of every person.
During the Dhamma programme, participants of the ceremony followed the formal Buddhist rituals and chanted prayers.
Due to the pandemic, the Embassy could not invite guests to the spiritual celebration. However, this became the first event which the Embassy streamed live on its social media: Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, with many of interested, both Sinhala and Russian, watching the Programme online.
The Full Moon Poya Day is a traditional Sri Lankan holiday, and each Poya Day, has its own specific events related to Lord Buddha and Buddhism.
The Il Moon Poya Day is the last Poya of the "Wassana" rainy season. The time for offering of "Katina Cheevera", thick robes for the rainy season to Buddhist priests who observed "Vas" or the rainy season sojourn ends on Il full moon poya day.
It was on Il Poya day that the first Buddhist missionary activity by the sixty Arahath, the announcement of the future Buddha-hood of Maitriya Bodhisatva, Jatila brothers entering the Buddhist order, Passing away of the Chief Disciple Sariputta and laying of Gautama Buddha's Dakunu Aku Datuwa tooth in the right jaw in the first Dagoba Thuparama Chaitya which was constructed by King Devanampiyatissa.
