On December 17, 2020, Gp Capt Uditha Piyasena, accompanied by Embassy interpreter, attended the First planning conference on the preparation of the International Army Games-2021 (IAG-2021).
During the conference, which was held in the Ceremonial Hall of the Russian Ministry of Defence, members of the military diplomatic corps, accredited in Russia, were informed about the venues chosen for the competitions, sanitary norms and regulations, refereeing system, and schedule of activities for IAG-2021. Representatives of the co-organizing countries made their presentations regarding the status of preparations for the competitions on their territory. Out of 34 competitions of the IAG-2021, only half are planned to be held in Russia. Some of the countries will host these competitions for the first time, like Serbia, Qatar, Vietnam, and Algeria.
Russia held most of the competitions in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, which prevented some countries from hosting and participating in the Games. One of those countries was Sri Lanka, who took part in the IAG for the first time in 2019, but was unable to host the Field Kitchen competition – the friendliest of all – in 2020. This year, since the situation continues to be very difficult, some countries are still waiting for the decision of their governments regarding their participation. Other countries have already submitted their bids, hoping for the best. Thus, this year the army chefs will compete in their cooking art in Uzbekistan.
Sri Lanka, among 95 other countries, will be invited to take part in the IAG-2021, which will be held in 12 countries (with India, Mongolia, and Qatar still awaiting confirmation from their higher authorities) this year. As one of the participating countries, Sri Lanka was invited to make its contribution to the Hall of Fame pavilion, where national uniforms and other items of competitors will be displayed.
