On January 21, 2021, Gp Capt Uditha Piyasena, Counsellor, Defence, at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow, met his counterpart from the Republic of Belarus, Col Yevgeny Artemenko to discuss ways of furthering defence cooperation between the two countries.
Belarus, a 9,4 million nation in Eastern Europe, member of the Union State with the Russian Federation, has maintained good relations with Sri Lanka for a long time. With its many education opportunities, its advanced industrial capabilities with solid foundations in proven soviet technology, and traditional hospitality, it has the capacity to give more to the world and Sri Lanka in particular if there would be some to explore its potential.
Mutual interest for developing the ties between Sri Lanka and Belarus was expressed during the meeting of two defence attachés. In particular, the possibility for training of Sri Lankan military personnel in the Military academy of the Republic of Belarus was discussed. Col Artemenko also briefed Gp Capt Piyasena on the structure and mechanisms of cooperation between Belarus and other countries, on the range of military products, manufactured in Belarus, its repair facilities, and invited Sri Lankan representatives to come to Belarus and meet with its manufacturers and exporters and make first hand decisions.
Gp Captain Uditha Piyasena expressed gratitude to Belarussian military command for the warm welcome and hospitality rendered to Sri Lankan participants of the Sniper Frontier competition of the Army Games-2019 and also discussed the possibility of representatives from the Ministry of Defence of Belarus to attend defence scientific conferences, symposiums, and other events in Sri Lanka.
