23 March 2021, the Embassy held an online Inaugural meeting on Introduction of Russian Language to Sri Lankan Schools and Training of English Teachers in Russian Schools, which gathered a number of high-level officials from both Sri Lankan and Russian sides. This meeting became another step in the Embassy cooperation with the Moscow School No. 1250.
Apart from Prof. M. D. Lamawansa, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Moscow, and the Embassy team, from the Sri Lankan side, the meeting was graced by Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Governor of the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka, Hon. Lalith Gamage, Governor of the Central Province of Sri Lanka, Prof. E. P. S. Chandana, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Ms. Chamari Andarage, Provincial English Coordinator, Central Province, Ms. K. K. A. S. Wickramasinghe, Assistant Director of Education (English), Provincial Department of Education Sabaragamuwa, and other officials of Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces.
From the Russian side, Ms. Anastasiya Khokhlova, Head of the Rossotrudnichestvo representative office in Sri Lanka, joined the meeting together with Mr. Vasily Murzak, Director of Moscow School No. 1250, Ms. Elena Sharkadi, Vice Director of the School for Education, as well as other staff of School No. 1250.
Prof. M. D. Lamawansa, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, in his opening remarks mentioned that this effort is a "significant event in the landscape of the relationship Sri Lanka and Russia" and expressed hope that "this meeting would create more opportunities to students and teachers from both countries to learn about the other at the Embassy's fullest support".
Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Governor of the Sabaragamuwa Province, where Russian language is already taught in several schools, assured that "more person-to-person exchanges will be added to relations between the two countries using the modern technology".
Hon. Lalith Gamage, Governor of the Central Province of Sri Lanka, in his address, stated that "incorporating Russian language to the school curriculum is a timely matter of great significance".
Ms. Anastasiya Khokhlova, Head of the Rossotrudnichestvo representative office in Sri Lanka, in her turn, underlined that the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka believes "this field of cooperation will be prospective and important".
Mr. Vasily Murzak, Director of Moscow School No. 1250, shared his expectation that "the prosperous cooperation and all efforts will lead to a full scale partnership, teacher exchange, mutual visits, teachers' practice, academic exchange".
The high-level representation from the both sides gave a powerful impetus to the interschool collaboration between Sri Lanka and Russia: the sides agreed to develop cooperation on teacher-to-teacher, student-to-student level, as well as to improve teaching of Russian as a foreign language in Sri Lanka.
