24 March 2021 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia organized the first meeting between the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka and the Cheboksary Branch of S.N Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution under the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
Cheboksary is the city where, for the first time in the Soviet Union, in 1960, Academician Svyatoslav Fedorov performed an operation to implant an artificial lens into the eye. Since then, the Cheboksary Clinic began its path to worldwide fame as a surgical and research center in the field of ophthalmology. The center conducts research, educational, medical activities. In addition, as a National Medical Research Center, it oversees the activities of ophthalmological institutions in neighboring regions, provides them with organizational, medical and methodological assistance.
The College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka is the apex academic and professional body in the field of Ophthalmology in Sri Lanka. Main goals of the College of Ophthalmologists are to achieve and maintain the highest standards of clinical practice of Ophthalmology, further improvements of ophthalmic education, training, research, prevention of blindness and visual impairment, promotion of co-operation, co-ordination and fellowship.
Prof. M. D. Lamawansa, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Russia highlighted that the meeting would create "a solid platform for serious cooperation between the two countries and the Embassy is ready to contribute to the programme".
During the meeting, the two parties were represented by Dr. Nadezhda Pozdeeva, Director of the Cheboksary Branch of S.N Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution and her staff, and by Dr. Ranmini Seneviratne, President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka and the staff of COSL, who agreed to develop a programme of academic, scientific, research and education cooperation. Both Heads of the two healthcare organizations also appreciated the efforts taken by the Embassy to ensure improvement of collaboration between Sri Lanka and Russia in such an important sphere.
