On March 25, Gp Capt Uditha Piyasena, Counsellor, Defence at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow attended the annual briefing of the Committee on Defence and Security of the Federation Council of Russia for foreign defence attachés, accredited in the Russian Federation. The meeting was presided over by the Chair of the Committee, Col Gen (Rtd) Victor Bondarev, former Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aero-Space Forces, Hero of the Russian Federation.
First Deputy Chairman of the Committee Vladimir Kozhin, Committee Deputy Chairmen Yury Valyaev and Sergey Arenin, and Committee member Sergey Kolbin also took part in the briefing. The event was attended by 75 members of the military diplomatic corps from 50 countries.
The discussion touched upon the current issues of legislative support for the defence capabilities of the Russian Federation, and included a report on the activities of the Federation Council Committee, which plays a major role in addressing the issues of domestic and international security.
Victor Bondarev, the Committee's Chair stated in his speech that Russia is actively building military and military-technical cooperation with a number of countries in the Asia Pacific region, including Sri Lanka.
