End of February – beginning of March 2022 Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage brought three high level delegations from Moscow to Colombo. The visits were symbolic as this year Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation mark 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

The delegation headed by a major Russian developer and investor, the Chair of the Board of Russia – Sri Lanka Friendship Society Mr. Pyotr Ryzhkov, and Secretary General of Russian Association of International Cooperation, Vice President of Russia – Sri Lanka Friendship Society Mr. Vladimir Polozkov were received by the President of Sri Lanka H.E. Gotabaya Rajapaksa  and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa. The matters pertaining to strengthening and expanding collaboration between the countries, trade and investment opportunities were discussed during the meetings.  

During the visit, the delegation conducted meetings with the State Minister of Regional Cooperation Hon. Tharaka Balasuriya and other high-level dignitaries to discuss areas of common interest in order to explore investment potential and mutually beneficial business opportunities.

The President of Sri Lanka H.E. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa received the Russian delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry of the Russian Federation H.E. Mr. Gruzdev together with the high officials of the Moscow City Government. During the meeting, the sides discussed the prospects for collaboration between Sri Lanka and Russia in trade and economic spheres.

Delegation of RUDN Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (former Lumumba University) headed by Vice Rector Ms. Larisa Efremova was received by Prime Minister Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss cooperation in the Education sphere. During the stay in Sri Lanka the RUDN delegation met Minister of Health Hon. Keheliya Rambukwella and Minister of Education Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena. A number of MOUs were signed with the Universities of Sri Lanka.

The delegations participated in the Ceremonial event organized at the Russian Center in Colombo on the occasion of 65th Anniversary of the establishment of Sri Lanka – Russia diplomatic relations.
