In the framework of preparation of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) visit to Sri Lanka to develop Buddhist-related education in Russia, on 02 September 2022 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation organized a series of meetings with representatives of Sri Lankan Universities, which expressed their wish to make an input to development of the programme, as well as the University Grants Commission.
Vice Chancellors and high officials of the following 05 Sri Lankan Universities joined the meeting: University of Kelaniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo, Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, University of Ruhuna. The meetings were also graced by Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, and Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the University Grants Commission. RUDN University was represented by Mrs. Natalia Guschina, Deputy Vice-rector for International Affairs, Ms. Nadezhda Kuchma, Project Coordination Specialist of the Department of International Projects, and others.
Peoples' Friendship University explained that the goal of the programme is to create educational opportunities to Russian Buddhists, mostly residing in the regions of Altai, Tyva and Kalmykia. The University expressed its interest in obtaining opportunities of mutual short-term internships, discovering opportunities for cooperation in the field of master degree, conducting conferences, symposia and other events.
The Sri Lankan side assured RUDN that it is ready to develop special courses, conduct joint research and share its valuable experience of providing fundamental education on Buddhist philosophy, culture, history, etc. The parties undertook to continue communication to contribute to dissemination of Sri Lankan Buddhist-related studies in Russia.
