On February 8-10, 2023, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage visited Kursk at the invitation of the Rector of Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) Prof. Viktor Lazarenko.

In the framework of the visit H.E. the Ambassador took part as the Honoured guest in the Academic Council of Kursk State Medical University dedicated to 88 Anniversary of the University foundation. On this occasion, H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage was awarded the medal "Honoured staff-member of the University" and a memorable plaque. A solemn extended meeting of the Council was also attended by the Governor of Kursk region H.E. Roman Starovoit, high-level officials and delegations from Thailand and India.
Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage warmly congratulated the University and announced that a Universities' Russian-Sri Lankan Association of Medical and Allied Sciences would be established, to be headed by KSMU Rector Prof. Viktor Lazarenko.
The diploma from Kursk Medical University is a mark of quality not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders. Today, more than 2,300 students from 44 countries are studying at KSMU including about 300 future doctors from Sri Lanka. Thus, H.E. the Ambassador had a meeting with the Sri Lankan students to discuss their security, studies, wellbeing and fees-payment-related issues.
H.E. the Ambassador held a fruitful discussion with the Rector Prof. Viktor Lazarenko, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Kursk Dr. Mohamad Chehine, Director of International Medical Institute, and Administration of KSMU addressing the matters pertaining to cooperation between KSMU and Sri Lankan Educational institutions, security and wellbeing of Sri Lankan students. The issues of development cooperation in trade, economy and tourism sectors while strengthening the collaboration in education sphere were also raised with the Hony. Consul Dr. Mohamad Chehine.
In her interview H.E. the Ambassador Janitha Abeywikrema Liyanage highlighted: "We hope to conduct joint research, seminars, conferences. I think this will be a great mission entrusted to us to strengthen the educational friendship between our states."
Ambassador Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage also attended the Cultural Evening organized by the foreign students and enjoyed the dance and singing performance of Sri Lankan doctors-to-be.
