On May 11-13, 2023 Sri Lankan Ambassador H.E. Professor Janitha A. Liyanage paid her first working visit to the Republic of Tatarstan, one of the most economically developed regions of Russia, in order to explore its trade, economic, and humanitarian potential and seek opportunities for fruitful cooperation.

During her stay in Kazan, the Ambassador was received by the Head of the Republic H.E. Rustam Minnikhanov. The meeting took place at the working office of the Head of the Republic in the Kazan Kremlin.
H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage expressed readiness to enhance cooperation and expand contacts in science, education, trade and tourism with the region.
Welcoming the Ambassador, Rais Rustam Minnikhanov thanked her for the interest in interacting with the Republic and stressed that "Russia's relations with South Asian countries have always remained warm and developed in a constructive manner. Sri Lanka is one of the favourite holiday destinations of Tatarstan's tourists". The Head of the Republic underlined that they highly appreciate the possibility of establishing cooperation between Tatarstan and Sri Lanka in the framework of friendly relations between our countries.
In the framework of the stay, H.E. the Ambassador Prof. Liyanage visited Tatarstan Investment Development Agency, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tatarstan, Investment Agency, the INNOPOLIS and Alabuga special economic zones, including Innopolis University, which focuses on education and research in the field of IT and Robotics and Alabuga educational facilities of vocational technical training , industrial and manufacturing parks and innovation infrastructure etc.
During the meeting with the Head of the Republic H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage discussed cooperation opportunities in education among other things where Rais assured of his full support for academic exchange and joint research between Sri Lankan and Tatarstan universities. Thus, H.E. the Ambassador paid a visit on Kazan Federal University. Vice-Rector Timirkhan Alishev accompannied the visitors at the History Museum, the Emperor Ballroom, and the Lenin Memorial Classroom, and showed them a presentation of Kazan Federal University. A member of Tatarstan's Commission for UNESCO Affairs Academitian Engel Tagirov was also present.
