On 31 July 2023, an official commencement of work of the Russian Language and Culture Center for Open Education was held with participation of high-level guests at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine.
The Russian Language and Culture Center, which was opened jointly by the Chuvash State Pedagogical University (ChSPU), Russia, and the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM), on 13 March this year, started its first classes on 18 July 2023. Three teachers of the ChSPU arrived to Sri Lanka and have started giving Russian language classes to 160 students of the GWUIM.
The official commencement of work ceremony was graced by a number of high-level guests: Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Levan Dzhagaryan, Ambassador of Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, representatives of the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Sri Lanka, Prof. Vladimir Nikolaevich Ivanov, Acting Rector of the ChSPU ,Prof. Ranjana W. Seneviratne, Vice Chancellor of the GWUIM, Dr. Asanka Pallewatta, Director of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi International Center, and students of the course.
The speakers wished the initiative would gain a strong impetus and enable wider groups of Sri Lankans to gain the knowledge of the Russian language, opening to them future prospects of education, employment and business in Russian language and with Russian-speaking countries. All sides expressed their utmost support to the project and wished it a sustainable development.
