On September 14, 2023, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage arrived to the Republic of Kalmykia at the invitation of the Head of the Republic Mr. Batu Khasikov.
The delegation was traditionally welcomed with the white khadaks (scarfs), symbols of wellbeing and purity of thoughts, and received by the Head of the region H.E. Mr. Batu Khasikov and Chairman of the Government Ms. Gilyana Boskhomdzhieva at the Government House of the Republic. The sides discussed the common areas of interest for developing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Kalmykia, including trade and economic, education, Buddhist studies, tourism etc.
The Head of the Mission Prof. Liyanage, the Head of the Republic Mr. Batu Khasikov and the delegation members laid flowers at the Memorial complex, honoring the memory of the fallen defenders of the Motherland with a minute of silence.
In the framework of her stay in Kalmykia, Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage took part in the IV Economic Forum "Elista 2023. My Business." as one of the key speakers at the Plenary Session focusing on the global integration using the potential of Sri Lanka and the region.
On the margins of the Forum, the Embassy delegation made a Presentation on Sri Lanka Tourism Potential at the Session dedicated to Tourism developments, prospectives and best practices.
H.E. the Ambassador had a fruitful discussion with the Rector of Kalmyk State University Dr. Badma Salaev addressing the matters pertaining to cooperation between Sri Lankan Educational Institutions and KSU. The delegation was familiarized with the living and recreation conditions in the student dormitory, the studies and life of foreign students in the university, among whom there are representatives of Sri Lanka. Prof. Janitha Liyanage made welcome remarks to the students and answered the questions about her academic experience.
The Delegation visited the Golden Abode of Shakyamuni Buddha, the Main Buddhist Temple, where she met with the Shajin Lama of the Republic, Geshe Tenzin Chojdak. They discussed cooperation in Buddhist education and interaction between monasteries and Buddhist universities.
In addition to the main Buddhist monastery, the Ambassador visited the Kazan Cathedral and the Palmov National Museum. H.E. the Ambassador noted the remarkable similarities between the cultures of Sri Lanka and Kalmykia.
