On November 21, 2023, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage attended a Conference devoted to the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Civil Chamber of the Russian Federation.

The Universal Declaration established universal standards for promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. It was instrumental in forming an international course for promoting and protecting human rights, and developing international law in general. Its basic idea is non-acceptance of oppression and injustice.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants on the opening of the conference. In his message, Vladimir Putin stated, "A demand for radical change has emerged in the international community. There is an obvious need to ensure a just approach towards the implementation of human rights, based on mutual respect and taking account of the cultural and historical development of various states. Civil society institutions should play a crucial role in reaching this goal.
On November 23, 2023, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage participated in the scientific conference jointly organized by the MFA and Peoples' Friendship University on the subject, "Russia and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - 75 years. Achievements and Challenges".
The conferences were attended by Ms.Tatyana Moskalkova, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of the Russian Bar Association, Mr. Valery Fadeev, Chairman of the Human Rights Council, Ambassadors, foreign guests and many other officials.
