On December 1, 2023, the Embassy of Sri Lanka, together with the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), organized a meeting with Russian entrepreneurs of the President of the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, Mr. Indika Liyanahewage.
The session was opened by MCCI President Vladimir Platonov praising the Embassy's enduring efforts of creating bilateral links between potential Sri Lankan and Russian companies. He added that Russian entrepreneurs who are interested in cooperation with Sri Lanka, as well as representatives of the executive branch, have been invited to the meeting at the Moscow Chamber, which allows us to count on the successful development of cooperation.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, prof. Janitha Abeywickrema Liyanage, in turn, expressed gratitude to the President of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry for his respectful attitude towards Sri Lanka. She said that her country has a well-developed garment industry: "We have many companies that employ highly qualified personnel. Many European companies have left the Russian market, but our country is ready to fill these gaps!"
During the meeting, the parties raised for discussion such an important issue as the amount of customs duties. In response to the proposal of H.E. the Ambassador on lowering the import customs duty on textile products, the President of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry promised to bring the issue up for discussion at the level of the Government of the Russian Federation and assured that the likelihood of a positive consideration of the issue is very high.
Deputy General Director of JSC Textilexpo Irina Ryzhova spoke about the international exhibition Textillegprom, which is held annually in February, and invited representatives of the Association of Clothing Exporters of Sri Lanka to take part in it: "The main distinguishing feature of our exhibition is the provision of a full cycle from raw materials and equipment to finished products of the textile and light industry."
Then all the capital's entrepreneurs present at the meeting had the opportunity to present their business and discuss possible areas of cooperation between Moscow and Sri Lankan entrepreneurs in the textile industry.
