On 05 February 2025, Mr. Chamila Jayarathna, Chargé d'Affaires a. i. of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia, participated in the Round Table dedicated to the celebrations of the 65th Anniversary of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba (RUDN University).
The RUDN University, which was established on 05 February 1960, became alma mater to thousands of international students, including many generations of students from Sri Lanka, who were able to reach professional success after returning to Sri Lanka. Currently about 13 000 foreign students obtain their higher education in the University, including about 60 Sri Lankan students.
The event gathered 112 representatives of diplomatic corps from 75 states, who came to celebrate the significant role of the University in promoting Russian education abroad and strengthening Russia's relations in the field of science and education with foreign countries.
The Rector of the University, Mr. Oleg Yastrebov, in his speech encouraged foreign students to participate in the Open RUDN Olympiad, which is held in February-March 2025 online and offline, and which would grant Russian Government Scholarships for its winners in the Bachelor's, Specialist and Master's levels.
