On February 05, 2025, Сhargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation Mr. Chamila Jayarathna took part in the special event of friendship organized by the Russian Association for International Cooperation and Friendship Society with Sri Lanka on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

The CdA Mr. Chamila Jayarathna read out the Independence Day address of H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, President of Sri Lanka to the public. In his welcome remarks, Mr. Chamila Jayarathna emphasized the milestones in the history of the country and stressed the strong areas of mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia including educational initiatives, cultural exchanges and trade partnership.

Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia (2015-2018), Chairman of the Russian Geographical Society Center in Sri Lanka and Secretary General of Sri Lanka – Russia Friendship Society attended the event and addressed the audience underlining the importance of people-to-people direct links and the role of public organizations in strengthening of bilateral relations.

The event, which was attended by over 100 people, was held in a friendly atmosphere at Gostiny Dvor Exhibition and Forum platform. Words about friendship, trust and partnership between Sri Lanka and Russia were heard from the speakers on stage that evening.

The cultural programme of the evening included performances by Sri Lankan and Russian dancers and singers.
