Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation Shobini Gunasekera with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Belarus officially presented open copies of her Letters of Credence to Sergey Lukashevich, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, during a formal meeting held on 24 June in Minsk.

During the cordial discussion, both parties reaffirmed the long-standing ties between Sri Lanka and Belarus, expressing mutual interest in further enhancing bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and cultural domains, particularly acknowledging that current year (2025) commemorates the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Deputy Minister welcomed the Ambassador and conveyed Belarus' commitment to strengthening relations with Sri Lanka. Both parties agreed to convene Political Consultations between the two foreign ministries and Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation to mark the significant milestone in the bilateral ties in the second half of the year.
Ambassador Gunasekera also held productive meetings with the Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Belarus. The discussions focused on exploring joint initiatives in public health, particularly in the fields of medical research, pharmaceutical collaboration, and wellness tourism. Additionally, both sides reviewed potential opportunities to expand tourism exchanges and promote Sri Lanka, as an emerging destination for Belarusian travelers.
These meetings laid a foundation for further technical-level dialogue and proposed the exchange of business delegations to follow up on identified areas of mutual interest.
The visit underscores Sri Lanka's commitment to fostering meaningful engagement with the Republic of Belarus, in alignment with its broader foreign policy goals and national development objectives.
