
The Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow celebrated the 78th National Independence Day of Sri Lanka on February 4, 2026, with a vibrant gathering featuring traditional ceremonies and cultural performances. The event gathered Sri Lankan professionals, members of the business community, and students residing in the Russian Federation.
The celebration commenced with the hoisting of the national flag, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Highlights of the evening included the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing enlightenment and prosperity for the nation, followed by the singing of Jaya Mangala Gatha. A two-minute silence was observed to honor all patriots who have laid down their lives to preserve and protect the freedom, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. In keeping with Sri Lanka's diverse religious heritage, the program featured multi-faith religious observances, reflecting the nation's commitment to religious harmony and coexistence.
The ceremony included the reading of official messages of the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, conveying the government's vision for the progress of the nation.
Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera in her remarks thanked for the humanitarian assistance and donations to the 'Rebuild Sri Lanka' program by Russians and Sri Lankans living in the Russian Federation. She also emphasized the collective responsibility of all Sri Lankans to contribute to national recovery, resilience, and sustainable development, inviting Sri Lankans living in Russia to participate in the rebuilding process through knowledge sharing, skills development, investments, trade, tourism, advocacy and strengthening people to people ties. She also underscored the improving of unity, national pride and social harmony noting that Sri Lanka community serves a vital bridge between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation in strengthening relations particularly when both countries will celebrate the unique milestone of 70th Anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
The evening's cultural segment showcased the richness of Sri Lankan heritage through captivating performances by Sri Lankan students. The National Day speech by H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka, was also screened at the event.
The celebration concluded with guests being treated to an authentic Sri Lankan dinner with traditional sweets, successfully bringing the community together to honor Sri Lanka's independence, celebrate its cultural heritage, and reaffirm their commitment to the nation's continued prosperity and unity.
