Sri Lankan student community in Russia is organizing Sri Lankan Cultural Week between 11-15 February, 2019, at the premises of the Peoples' Friendship University with the support and guidance of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow, in parallel to the 71st anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence.
Unique Sri Lankan products are exhibited, displaying Sri Lanka's scenic beauty and its cultural values. This event also provides a platform to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination, and popularize Ceylon Tea among Russian and other students from all over the world. Brochures on Sri Lanka tourism and Ceylon Tea are distributed to the participants during the exhibition.
On 11th February, the Sri Lankan Cultural Week was opened with the participation of the officials of the Embassy of Sri Lanka and officials of the RUDN university. Mr. Dulmith Waruna, First Secretary of the Embassy of Sri Lanka addressed the gathering on behalf of H.E. the Ambassador. In his opening remarks Mr. Waruna mentioned that this event is genuinely showcasing Sri Lankan culture, people, and multifaceted beauty of Sri Lanka. "There is no doubt that the organization of such events will increase the awareness of Sri Lanka among other nations," said Mr. Waruna. "It will also create a platform for students to exchange their values and ideas with their peers, to build up strong friendship among the nations for their peaceful and mutually enriching co-existence," he added. Ms. Nirosha K. Herath, Second Secretary, Ms. Chathurika Perera, Second Secretary (Commerce) and Ms. Nayomi Chandrasiri, Officer responsible for Consular and Education affairs of the Embassy of Sri Lanka, were also present at the opening ceremony, representing the Embassy.
During the exhibition, there will be a tourism seminar on the 12th of February on the subject, "Tourism Potential of Sri Lanka: Prospects for development," arranged by the Sri Lankan students of RUDN university with the support of the trade section of the Embassy. The main targeted audience of the seminar is undergraduate and postgraduate students of the RUDN Hotel Business and Tourism Institute, who will be in the key positions of Russian Tourism industry in the future.
The Exhibition will close on 15 February. On that day, there will be a concert "Journeying through Serendib," where Sri Lankan students will stage traditional national performances.
