Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka accompanied by Madame Sanja Jayatilleka paid a visit to the main monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra. The Lavra was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, and is now recognized as the spiritual heart of Russia.
The visit took place on October 14, 2019. On the same day orthodox Christians celebrated one of the most revered feasts, the Veil of the Holy Virgin Mary. The guests were received by His Reverence, hieromonk Agafon, the Dean of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, and the hierodeacon Ioann, Deputy Head of the Pilgrimage Center.

The visit of the Monastery commenced with the tour of the three main churches of the Lavra - the Holy Trinity church, Dormition cathedral and Refectory, the heritage of the 14th - 17th century. Ambassador Jayatilleka and Madame Sanja Jayatilleka bowed to the relicts of St. Sergius, the founder of the Monastery, and other venerated shrines kept in the Lavra, climbed the bell tower and went to the Moscow Theological Academy for the excursion through the main exposition of the MTA museum with the supreme collection of medieval icons, manuscripts and books on display. Ambassador Jayatilleka was invited to write the impression of the visit. "It was an unforgettable, spiritual and educational experience of a life for me and my wife, which made us closer to God and to Russia", he wrote.
The tour of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra and Museum of Moscow Theological Academy was followed by a warm luncheon discussion held at the dining hall of the bishops' hotel in which the Metropolitans stay during their visit to the Lavra.
