On December 10, 2019 the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation hosted the international conference "From Inequality to Justice: World Experience and Solutions for Russia". Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka accompanied by Madame Sanja Jayatilleka attended the Conference at the invitation of Sergey Ordzhonikidze, Secretary of the Civic Chamber of Russia and Chairman of the Russian Public Council of International Cooperation and Public Diplomacy.
Adviser to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin Mr. Valery Fadeyev, the keynote speaker and initiator of the idea to hold the conference in order to discuss the pressing issues of injustice and consolidate world practices for overcoming inequality, recalled that the right to work for reasonable wages is a constitutional human right in Russia, along with the right to healthcare and education. "People have a demand for social justice and we cannot ignore it" he added.
Civic Chamber was established to help citizens interact with government officials and local authorities in order to take into account the needs and interests of citizens, to protect their rights and freedoms.
Members of the Civic Chamber together with foreign experts, academics, politicians and public figures from different countries including China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Morocco, Serbia, South Korea, Vietnam, Finland, Cambodia, Cote d'Ivoire gathered at the Plenary Sessions to discuss economic, social and environmental aspects of inequality on a global scale and to determine ways to reduce the high level of inequality and poverty in society in order to ensure equal access and opportunities for everybody in healthcare and education using the world's best practices.
Opening the Conference Ambassador Sergey Ordzhonikidze welcomed the audience and spoke about "the issue of inequality in its different manifestations that is typical in the world." He emphasized that "existing inequalities create serious barriers to development".
The Conference included two plenary sessions entitled "Justice for everyone: Curbing inequality as a key goal of our time" and "Strategy to overcome inequality in the Russian Federation: New approaches based on the international experience" and a series of thematic sessions.
Ambassador Jayatilleka also attended the panel discussion dedicated to "An ideology platform for fighting inequality: Looking for a fair way", moderated by Veronika Krasheninnikova, Deputy Chair of the Commission on public diplomacy, humanitarian cooperation and maintenance of traditional values. H. E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka had conversations with the key speakers of the Panels on the issues of reducing inequality and ensuring social justice.
