With the aim of promoting Sri Lankan culture in the provincial regions of Russia, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow organized a cultural show in the city of Kursk on 31st August. The Kursk city is located 550 Km away from Moscow.
The event was held on Sunday the 31st August at the Boyeva Dacha Park, located in the center of the city. The show was the first cultural event held in the park after the pandemic. The attendance was impressive, that the event was held on a Sunday afternoon.
Sri Lankan university students performed with national dances, songs and BALI (Sacrifice Dance). Masks portraying devils (Mahason and Kalu Yaka) aroused the interest of the participants. Russian students too presented items which were well prepared.
Sri Lankan Ambassador Prof. Lamawansa and Rector of Kursk State Medical University Prof. Viktor Lazarenko were the special guests of the event. The Rector highlighted the close and friendly relationship between Sri Lanka and Russia in general, and Kursk State Medical University in particular. He mentioned that KSMU has so far trained over 1000 doctors for Sri Lanka. Currently about 360 Sri Lankans students are following courses in Kursk universities.
In his address the Ambassador highlighted the similarities in cultures of the two countries and elaborated on the opportunities for strengthening cultural ties. To maintain strong cultural link with Russia, the Embassy has established a culture circle consisting of both Sri Lankans and Russians. The Ambassador has discussed with the Russian Ministry of Cultural affairs on strengthening cultural ties between the two countries. Russia has agreed to facilitate establishment of a Sri Lankan cultural center and a Buddhist center in Moscow. At present, there is no Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in Russia although several temples of Tibet, Thailand, Myanmar have been established in Moscow and some regions in Russia.
During the cultural show promotion of Ceylon Tea and Tourism was also done.
The embassy has planned to hold more cultural events in several Russian cities in the coming months.
