On April 27, 2020 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia started a two-day distribution of dry rations and financial aid to over 110 Sri Lankan nationals, most of whom are students studying at universities and other educational institutions in Moscow and other cities.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation facilitates the distribution of food packs and hygiene items among Sri Lankan students which was jointly organized by Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka-Russia Friendship Society and Former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, who became the initiator of this process, the Sri Lanka-Russia Friendship Association, Russian Centre in Colombo, the Cultural Division of Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society together with Russian Centre in Colombo, the Cultural Section of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka with Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society and the former Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation have arranged to provide assistance required by the students who are currently studying in the Russian Federation.

As the first step, Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society has distributed hand sanitizers and dry food packs among the students studying at Peoples Friendship University and Russian National Research Medical University (2nd Moscow State Medical University).

Charge d'Affaires of Sri Lanka in Russia Mr. Mohamed Anas, Second Secretary of the Embassy Ms. Nirosha Herath, and Student Coordinating Officer of the Embassy Ms. Nayomi Chandrasiri have provided a list of 148 students and the Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society will arrange the distribution of said items within next 2 days.
