17 – 19 May 2022 Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, made a working visit to the city of Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic, Russia at the invitation of the Governor H.E. Mr. Oleg Nikolev  in order to explore opportunities for cooperation in trade and economic, healthcare, tourism, education and cultural spheres. Mr. Vladimir Polozkov, Secretary General of Russian Association of International Cooperation and Deputy Chairman of Russia-Sri Lanka Friendship Society also participated in the programme of the visit.

Sri Lanka and Chuvashia plan to establish trade cooperation, primarily in terms of opening trade houses and introducing Sri Lankan products to wider community in Chuvash Republic and Volga region of Russia and Chuvash ones in Sri Lanka. The parties also spoke about the opportunities in tourism, equipment, machinery and green energy products, achievements in education and healthcare.

In the framework of the visit the Ambassador held discussions with the Governor of Chuvash Republic H.E. Mr. Oleg Nikolayev, Minister of Economic Development Mr. D. Krasnov and Minister of Health Mr. Stepanov.

“Sri Lanka has an institute for eye and cornea donation and it works with many countries. We can work on this matter,” Prof. Janitha Liyanage said. - Another possible area of ​​cooperation is the opening of Ayurveda wellness centers in the regions of Russia."

Governor Oleg Nikolaev expressed readiness to assist in the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives. “You can count on our interest: Moreover, we are implementing a large project - an interregional rehabilitation center that will offer multi-directional health and rehabilitation services,” he said.

At the invitation of the Government Ambassador visited a number of institutions and enterprises such as Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Eye Microsurgery National Medical Research center, Chuvash State University named after I.N. Ulyanov, Chuvash, CHEAZ Cheboksary Electrical Apparatus plant, CHETRA Russian company manufacturing industrial machinery, Chuvashkhleboprodukt grain harvester and flour milling company, Chuvashia Resort, and Yasna Ethnographic Complex.

The sides agreed to use the mutually beneficial opportunities for the development of long-term cooperation and strong business relations between Sri Lanka and the region with particular emphasis to trade, economic, healthcare and tourism sectors.

At the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chuvash Republic Ambassador Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage held discussion with the President of CCI and business representatives on major issues of cooperation and expansion of bilateral relations between enterprises of the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Sri Lanka. The participants of the meeting had an opportunity to directly address the Ambassador about the possibility and peculiarities of interaction with the enterprises of the Republic of Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Janitha A. Liyanage visited the Cheboksary "Eye Microsurgery" Federal Institution named after Academician  S.N. Fedorov of the Ministry of Health of Russia and met with the Director of the branch, Doctor of Medical Sciences Nadezhda A. Pozdeeva. During the meeting, the parties agreed to organize a visit of the leadership of the Cheboksary branch to Sri Lanka in order to get acquainted with the work of the key medical and educational centers of Sri Lanka, to communicate with the top officials of the country's healthcare system. In addition, it was decided to organize business trips for doctors from both sides for experience exchange.

Liyanage, accompanied by Minister of Economic Development Mr. Dmitry Krasnov, General Secretary RAIC Mr. Vladimir Polozkov, Chuvasia RAIC representative Mr. Igor Smotrin and Head of MFA representative office in Cheboksary Mr. Alexander Pogodeikin participated in the ceremony of laying flowers to the eternal flame at the Republic Memorial Victory Park, a symbol of memory of the soldiers who fought in the Great Patriotic, Afghan and Chechen wars, the liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the sailors from Chuvashia.

During the visit the matters pertaining to training of highly qualified personnel in engineering and medical areas, IT, chemistry, pharmacy, and development of cooperation between the Chuvash State University and Higher Educational Institutions of Sri Lanka in the field of education, science and culture were discussed.
