The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow celebrated Vesak, the most sacred Buddhist festival, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Lord Buddha. The celebration was attended by a diverse group of invitees, including Sri Lankan students, members of the business community, and Russian friends.

The event began with a warm address by Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera, who emphasized the importance of mindfulness in the Buddhist doctrine and application into all aspects of life to achieve individual and collective success. She highlighted the core virtues of Buddhism—benevolence (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), empathetic joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā)—and underscored the need for these virtues in fostering a harmonious society. The Ambassador also spoke about the nationwide "Clean Sri Lanka Project," launched on January 1, 2025, by H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayake. She explained that the initiative aims not only to promote environmental sustainability but also to strengthen ethical values across the country.
Following the Ambassador's address, a profound Dhamma sermon was delivered by Ven. Rakwane Gnanasiha Thero, inspiring attendees with messages of compassion, wisdom, and peace.
To create an authentic Vesak atmosphere, the Embassy premises were decorated with Vesak lanterns in the colors of the Buddhist flag. Sri Lankan students, staff of the Embassy, and their families entertained guests with devotional songs, adding to the festive spirit.
The celebration concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan Dansala, where guests enjoyed a Sri Lankan delicacies, symbolizing generosity and community spirit.
