The official commencement of work of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation was held on 9 January 2024 following the Russian New Year holidays. The ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem by the staff, which was followed by the observance of a two-minute silence in remembrance of the war heroes and those who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland. Thereafter, the staff took the "Oath of Public Servants," pledging to work efficiently and productively throughout the upcoming year.

The Sri Lankan students of the Mahinda Rajapaksa College, who will undergo a short-term educational programme in the International School Interdom named after E. D. Stasova for the next three months, commenced their studies in Ivanovo city, Russia.

Following the visit of Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Moscow to the city of Ivanovo, on 21 December 2023, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation arranged an introductory online meeting between the Ivanovo State University (IvSU) and the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM).

The international New Year's event of People's Diplomacy was organized by the Russian Association for International Cooperation on December 11, 2023. The celebration gathered diplomatic corps, Russian officials and prominent people from educational and cultural spheres.

On December 14, 2023 H.E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage received Mr. Batu Khasikov, the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia with the delegation.

On December 7, Nizhny Novgorod hosted for the first time the Forum on Peoples' Diplomacy as a Soft Power for the Development of International Cooperation. H. E. the Ambassador Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage was invited to take part in the Forum as one of the key speakers.
