The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation in collaboration with the Russian Association of International Cooperation and Russia-Sri Lanka Friendship Society organised a solemn event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence.
The guests of this festive occasion gathered at Gostiny Dvor Pavilion in Moscow's downtown on February 3rd, 2023. Over 500 people attended the celebration.

On February 4th, 2023, Sri Lanka celebrated its 75th Independence day. In the Republic of Belarus, with its Sri Lankan community of over 1875 people, most of whom are students, the celebrations were held at the Grodno State Medical University.

On 24 January 2023, at the request of Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, the University Grants Commission (UGC), represented by its Chairman, Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, organized a meeting between the Rector of the Ural Federal University (UrFU) and representatives of Sri Lankan Universities.

On January 11-14, 2023, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Belarus H.E. Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage visited Minsk. One of the highlights of the visit was the official opening of the office of Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in the Republic of Belarus. The ceremony took place on January 12, 2023. The delegation of the Embassy was received by a newly appointed Hon. Consul Prof. Dmitry Ruzanov.

In the framework of the efforts to establish connections between Sri Lankan and Russian higher education establishments Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, proposed cooperation between the Ural Federal University (UrFU) and the National School of Business Management (NSBM Green University).
